Is Wrestling Real?
THE QUESTION:
The guys at SmartAboutWhat.co.za were not convinced that our wrestling was real, so they came to the professionals. What do YOU think happened?
THE ANSWER:
Sure enough, Shaun Koen and a small band of his mat men were quick to answer. The truth is revealed in this video.
October Swazi Slammer
Coming Soon! The AWA will be descending upon the Simunye Country Club for the Swazi Slammer event. Don’t miss out and pencil in those dates – 22/23/24th October 2010.
Next “House Of Pain” 28th SEPTEMBER 2010
The date is set in stone at last! On the 28th of September 2010 – the Pain will be brought once again! Don’t miss out..
See you all there!
Battle At The Dam!
The AWA is proud to once again announce this prestigious event at the great “Club Elani” venue at the Misverstand Dam. That’s world class wrestling just an hour out of Cape Town.
If you just want to watch the wrestling then come on down for the action! But we would suggest you make a total weekend out of it and book a cottage or bring your caravan. You can even book a camp site and enjoy the hospitality at Club Elani. See you there!
Profile: Jan Nortje
Meet Johannes. His friends, if he has any, call him Jan. As a professional South African K-1 Kickboxer, you’ll know him as Jan Nortje where with a mix of martial arts and pro boxing he, as a 2 metre tall behemoth has been a devastating force under the banners of Strikeforce, DREAM, PRIDE Fighting and New Japan Pro Wrestling. At 160kg it’s no wonder his also known as The Giant. As a devoted AWA follower you might be asking yourself – why should I care? This is why.
Mr Nortje recently found himself (as fully paid up spectators of his ilk usually do) at our recent House of Pain Title Championship bout where he felt the urge to challenge our current heavyweight champion, Shaun Koen to a one fall match. Predictably, Shaun accepted – and the two will now be facing each other in the squared circle at the next House of Pain. And THAT’S something you will NOT want to miss. Watch this space!

House of Pain 8 June: RESULTS
Ed Electric vs Hillbilly Kid
Two crowd favourites battled in the opening bout. As expected, both competitors put on a spectacle of high flying and lucha libre inspired antics. Between wowing the crowd and constantly trying to outdo each other, both wrestlers were evenly matched. Until Ed Electric attempted a death defying crossbody block off the top rope that was reversed and countered in to a pin by the Hillbilly Kid. Questions can now be asked as to whether Hillbilly Kid could someday soon be looking at another title shot. And just what will Ed Electric do to prove his worth?
Vinnie Vegas and Mr Money vs Sammy Swiegers and William McQueen.
The first of 2 tag team matches for the evening kicked underway as Mr Money and Vegas dominated the opening minutes with a few well prepared double team offence. Swiegers, who runs his own MMA dojo in the Strand, would soon regain control of the match for his team with a few well applied potentially bone-breaking submission techniques. The former Cruiserweight champion, McQueen, and Sammy would then manage to isolate Vinnie scoring nearfall after nearfall. It would be a slight error in judgment on William’s part that allowed Vinnie to counter with a skull crushing DDT thus giving the chance for Mr Money to be tagged in and clean house! Chaos insured and it was not long thereafter that Money hit his signature finisher, The Budget Cut, on Swiegers for the victory!
Johnny Palazzio vs Miss Gorgeous
The stipulation: If Palazzio walked away the winner, Miss Gorgeous would have to hang up her boots ‘n knickers and return to being the self-made superhero Blankman. BUT, if The Gorgeous One was able to secure a victory then she would be able to seal her new found revelry with Palazzio with a kiss! The bell sounded the beginning of the match and Johnny was quick to gain the early advantage. Those in attendance cheered Gorgeous on in hopes that she would regain control. And as only Gorgeous can, with her “questionable” tactics, she would soon have Palazzio in fear of losing his manhood. A quick distraction by FUBAR members on the outside and Johnny would once again have his opponent down witha thunderous Tiger Bomb. But the Italian Stallion got too cocky and in the blink of an eye, Miss Gorgeous rolled him up for the 3 count.
Palazzio tried to talk his way out of the post-match events, but it was fruitless. Miss Gorgeous simply lunged at him and planted a huge, sloppy and wet kiss (with tongue!) on the Current Cruiserweight Champion, much to the crowd’s delight who were cheering on their feet!
El Matador vs Revyv
In this non-title bout the Portuguese Man-of-War, El Matador, was out to prove himself as the future Light-Heavyweight. With a victory under his belt at the previous House of Pain, he was looking to upset the current undefeated Light-Heavyweight Champion Revyv. A more deliberate pace was set, unlike the previous light-heavyweight encounter earlier in the evening. Revyv and Matador hit each other powerful and hardhitting moves. The action soon spilled to the outside and in a rare occurrence, El Matador delivered a face-first suplex to Revyv on the steel steps! He may have caught the edging of the stairs, but the champion was bleeding profusely from a huge gash to the his head. Valiantly Revyv fought his way back into the contest, but his injury proved to be too much, and the Latino sensation was able to pick the win after his patented Heartbreaker(sunset flip powerbomb)!
BDX-treme and Bobby Rose vs The Oz and The Missing Link
The second tag match of the evening saw these 4 heavyweight brutes attempt to destroy each other in an all out war. As expected there would be no love lost in this bout, however each team’s partners proved to work well with each other. Inflicting pain and offence with various double team moves, BDX and Bobby Rose were capitalizing on their teamwork and were looking to score a win. However an ill-fated top rope corskrew moonsault from Rose saw their hopes of victory spiral downward. The Oz sent BDX flying over the top rope with an amazing flying clothesline as The former AWA Champion Missing Link finished off Bobby Rose with a menacing powerslam! Is this a sign of The Missing Link on a road back to championship glory?
Shaun Koen vs Boerseun
The All Africa Championship was put on the line as the champion Shaun Koen took on his second giant at the House of Pain, Boerseun. Hailing from Johannesburg, this mammoth of a man came to Cape Town not only looking for a fight but to claim the championship for his own. Much like Koen, Boerseun is soft-hearted in nature, but when the bell rang these 2 warriors battled to prove who would be number one heavyweight in the country. With big moves and powerful blows that would put a normal man in the hospital, these 2 giants were dishing it out with nearfall upon nearfall. Brawling around the ringside area, and back in the ring, it would be Parow Civic’s favourite son delivering a heart-stopping Samoan Drop, to put away Boerseun and successfully defend his championship!
Shaun’s celebrations would soon come to a crashing halt as from the audience another giant stepped into the ring. Jan Nortjie. An accomplished South African MMA fighter who has made a name for himself by pulverizing his opponents across the globe. Jan first congratulated Shaun on his hard fought win, but claimed he could beat the Lion of Africa. He would then challenged Koen to match at the next House of Pain! Shaun accepted, and now prepares to face his 3rd straight giant at the House of Pain in a War of Two Worlds! Will he survive this onslaught?
22-man BATTLE ROYAL
The final match of the evening was soon underway as all the wrestlers in the cloakroom (those who participated in matches earlier in the night, as well as a few others) made their way to the ring. The rules were simple. The match would start with every wrestler in the ring at the same time. Elimination occurs when someone is thrown over the top rope and both feet touch the floor. The last man remaining in the ring would be the victor and claim his prize. The prize? A contract, stipulating a guaranteed match with any AWA contracted wrestler at any moment, in any match, at any time. If said challenged wrestler held a championship, the match may be deemed a title match as well. Certainly a captivating idea and one that would see the involving wrestlers claw and fight their way to attain it. And that they did.
Starting furiously, the Battle Royal was underway. With so little space in the ring, it wasn’t long before bodies were sent flying over the top rope to the hardwood floor below. At the end of it all, it was Johnny Palazzio who stood tall and the winner of the Battle Royal!
Johnny Palazzio vs Miss Gorgeous
Johnny Palazzio vs Miss Gorgeous
How about a ‘His and Hers’ battle with a difference as the man’s man Johnny Palazzio takes on the seriously effeminate Miss Gorgeous in an awkward exchange of grapples, blows and take downs in a one fall – can JP defend his Italian manhood?
